My name is Chris Umbanhowar.
United States Navy Veteran, Gies College of Business alum, farmer of a 150+ generational farm, and storyteller.
I’m all about real stories, real people, and building connections.
Want to reach out? Let’s connect — I’d love to hear from you.
I’m originally from a small town called Hoopeston, IL. After high school, I joined the U.S. Navy — it opened my eyes to the world, and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.
In the Navy, I worked many roles built on teamwork, communication, and staying sharp. After my service, I attended the Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois, earning my degree in Marketing and diving into the power of storytelling.
Today, I live in Saint Joseph, IL, and I’m passionate about capturing the stories of the hard-working people across Champaign County and beyond.
U.S. Navy Veteran
I joined the Navy at 18, ready to see the world — and that’s exactly what I did.
From 2013 to 2018, I served two deployments aboard the U.S.S. George H.W. Bush, racking up over two and a half years at sea and visiting six+ countries. It was during this time that I discovered my love for marketing through travel and experience.
Visit my veteran page or contact me for any questions related to post-service benefits or how to obtain a certificate (digital or print) for any awards you received in service.
Education
From 2019 to 2021, I studied Marketing at the Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois.
While on campus, I spent much of my time supporting other veterans and military-connected students through the Chez Veteran Center. I also served as President of Illini Veterans.

Generational Farmer
I was raised on the Umbanhowar Farm, a sesquicentennial farm that's been in my family for over 150 years.
I've worked alongside my dad and grandpa raising livestock — chickens, goats, hogs, horses — and growing crops like corn, wheat, and soybeans. Over time, I picked up a love for growing my own vegetables, herbs, and microgreens, and learned firsthand what it takes to keep a farm thriving.
Interested in growing your own food or learning more about livestock? Let’s talk.
Story Teller
What I love most about life? The stories.
Whether it’s a farmer who’s spent decades on the land, a student veteran adjusting to civilian life, or someone chasing their next big goal — I believe every person has a story worth telling.
And I’m here to help tell them. Through video, writing, or one-on-one connection — I use my voice and experience to shine a light on others.
